One Year of POSCO Group — From Steel to Energy,
📌 2025-10-13 | KORI INSIGHT Global Edition
POSCO Holdings Analysis
When I first started following POSCO Holdings, it felt like reading a story I already knew — the steel giant that shaped a nation’s backbone.
But over this past year, the story quietly changed.
Now, it’s not just about steel plates and furnaces. It’s about batteries, lithium lakes, hydrogen steelmaking, and LNG terminals.
So today, let’s take a gentle walk through that transformation — one section, one breath at a time.
NAVER 1-Year Report — A Full Review of 2024–2025 Trends, Strategy, and Market Outlook
Why I wrote this
Between 2024 and 2025, POSCO moved through one of its busiest transitions in decades.
The group reorganized itself around four pillars:
steel, battery materials, lithium and nickel supply, and energy & trading.
Each one moved differently — but together, they built a rhythm that might define POSCO’s next decade.
This isn’t a financial forecast. It’s a full map — what happened, what changed, and what could quietly shift again soon.
1. The Shape of the Group
POSCO Holdings sits at the center, holding four key branches.
- POSCO (Steel) – Core operations: auto steel, electrical steel, and heavy plate.
- POSCO Future M (Battery Materials) – High-nickel, mid-nickel, and new LMR cathodes.
- POSCO Lithium Solution & Mining Projects – Anchored in Argentina and Australia.
- POSCO International (Energy & Trading) – LNG terminals, power, and food supply chains.
If steel still pays the bills, battery materials build tomorrow, and LNG keeps the lights steady.
2. How the Year Unfolded
November 2024 – Two fires hit the Pohang steelworks. Damage was controlled quickly, but the message was clear: safety must live in daily habits, not crisis response.
December 2024 – A new partnership on high-efficiency water electrolysis hinted that the hydrogen dream (HyREX) was not just R&D talk anymore.
January–March 2025 – Steel demand felt sluggish, but high-value auto sheet sales softened the blow. Future M began exporting cathode materials to North America.
April–June 2025 – Lithium prices stayed low. Yet in Argentina, POSCO’s first lithium plant moved toward full completion. Meanwhile, POSCO International expanded the Gwangyang LNG terminal, turning energy into a real stabilizer.
July–September 2025 – Future M announced full development of its LMR cathode — a new, cost-effective chemistry for mass-market EVs. Steel prices inched up. Lithium stayed quiet.
October 2025 – POSCO’s possible move to acquire HMM stirred debate. The shipowners’ association opposed it. Investors split between curiosity and caution.
3. Steel — The Old Heart, Still Beating
POSCO’s steel business feels calmer now.
Automotive and electrical steel kept margins safe, while shipbuilding revived demand for plates.
The problem is global oversupply, especially from China.
Spreads will probably recover — slowly, not spectacularly.
The goal isn’t expansion anymore. It’s precision: fewer shocks, smarter production, and consistent profit per ton.
4. Battery Materials — Building the Second Engine
POSCO Future M isn’t chasing the fastest chemistry anymore.
It’s building balance — high-nickel for range, mid-nickel and LMR for cost.
This shift turned out wise. When prices fell, the broader lineup cushioned losses.
What to watch next: precursor self-reliance, yield improvement, and new clients.
Once these appear in quarterly results, Future M’s narrative changes from “hope” to “proof.”
5. Lithium Chain — Owning the Source
Argentina’s salt flats still matter more than any headline price.
Even with weak lithium markets, having control over raw materials is priceless.
POSCO’s layered approach — mining, refining, and self-use — makes it less dependent on traders.
Yes, risks exist: local regulations, exchange rates, community ties.
But strategic location ages better than market mood swings.
6. Hydrogen & Low-Carbon Steelmaking
HyREX remains experimental, but every few months, another piece locks in place.
Korea’s policy focus on clean hydrogen could give POSCO a longer runway.
The challenge is pure economics: hydrogen costs, power availability, and capex control.
Still, if carbon tariffs expand in Europe, the payoff could come earlier than expected.
7. Energy & Trading — The Quiet Shield
POSCO International’s LNG projects look conservative from afar, but they are quietly smart.
Gwangyang’s expansion, bunkering infrastructure, and overseas gas offtakes will turn this segment into the group’s financial stabilizer by 2026.
When steel or lithium gets moody, LNG keeps the lights even.
8. The Bigger Picture
The world in 2025 isn’t kind to heavy industry.
High rates, slow demand, and unstable commodity cycles test everyone.
But POSCO learned to move across different tempos.
Steel earns today. Materials build tomorrow. Energy bridges the gap.
It’s not glamorous — but it’s quietly sustainable.
9. What Lies Ahead
2026–2027 will be the test years.
If three things happen together — higher-value steel mix, material yield improvement, and LNG cash contribution —
then POSCO stops being a “steel stock” and becomes a “portfolio compounder.”
It’s about execution now, not ambition.
10. KORI’s Thoughts
- Steel is still the heart, but the future pulses through lithium and energy.
- Diversification wasn’t a reaction — it was preparation.
- Numbers will prove what words can’t.
- And sometimes, the best strategy is staying boringly consistent.
11. Q&A
Q1. If lithium prices stay low, what happens to POSCO?
Margins may thin, but self-owned resources and broader product lines will soften the hit. Efficiency and yield matter more than price now.
Q2. When will the steel market turn?
Gradually. 2025 end to early 2026 looks like a slow recovery window — helped by autos and shipbuilding.
Q3. Should POSCO buy HMM?
Only if synergy is real, measured, and repeatable. Otherwise, it risks pulling focus from its core transformation.
